The Fridge

George, a greedy, selfish student, has become a nightmare to his fellow flatmates. Assigned the task of finding a new fridge to replace the apartment's dysfunctional one, George discovers an old fridge in a deserted alleyway. George pockets his flatmates' money and takes it home. From that day on, strange things start happening to George. The fridge is about to teach him a lesson.

“THE FRIDGE”
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

Growing up in the 80’s and loving the movies, it is fair to say I was practically raised on Steven Spielberg. His movies were the reason I got into filmmaking as they had, and still have, a profound impact on me.

With “The Fridge” I wanted to pay homage to the 80’s fantasy movie. I knew I wanted to shoot the movie using all kinds of storytelling tricks movies like this require, so it was very important to me that we shot on set. Although it is extremely rare for films to be shot on sets in Greece the producers stood by me despite our small budget, so Simon Pickup, our production designer, built the set pretty much single-handedly in a week.

I also knew that 50% of this story would be told through sound so our sound editor, Tasos Katsaris, meticulously sound designed the movie, re-recording every single sound-effect and line of dialogue in the movie. Tasos also composed a truly great score, awesome and deliciously dark, constantly toying with the audience while seamlessly completing my shots. Without Tasos, “The Fridge” would be half a short.

Above all, I wanted to make an entertaining movie, I wanted people to watch it and have fun just like I did watching those Spielberg classics in the 80’s…
